There’s a warning about an old scam that is beginning to resurface around the community. It preys on the elderly over the phone.
It is called the "grandparents scam," and Warsaw police say they have received several reports from folks who have been fallen victim to the scheme.

Here's a breakdown of what happens:

A senior citizen gets a phone call from a scam artist, who tells them that their grandchild is in jail or stranded without money, and needs their help to post bond or return home.

The victim is then told to wire money to a third party, but in reality, they are just paying a scamming stranger.

Many of these calls originate from out of the country, even though the caller ID may indicate otherwise.

Police say you should always check with the police or a family member first before you give out any personal information or transfer money in these situations.

And these scams are not just targeting folks in Warsaw. Police in Van Buren County say an 85-year-old man fell victim to this scheme just this week and lost $4,000 to a caller who claimed his grandson was injured in a car accident in Peru.
