MANISTEE, Mich. Gov. Rick Snyder says a Michigan State Police trooper killed during a traffic stop "was a role model for all of us."
Snyder spoke Saturday at the funeral service for Paul Butterfield in the western Michigan city of Manistee. The governor told a packed gymnasium at Manistee High School that the athlete and Army veteran lived "a life of service."
Snyder called the shooting "a senseless and terrible act."
Nineteen-year-old Eric Knysz was arraigned Friday on homicide, using a gun during a felony, car theft and habitual offender charges. He was appointed a public defender.
Authorities accuse him of shooting Butterfield in the head on Monday in Sherman Township, about 80 miles north of Grand Rapids. Twenty-year-old Sarah Knysz has been charged with helping her husband try to escape.
