A Goshen man is in deep water after he drunkenly drove his car straight into the Millrace Canal.
A witness called 911 just before 11 o'clock Thursday morning after seeing the vehicle crash into the water.
Marc Peterson, 63, told police was driving his Toyota Corolla on the footpath along the canal when he lost control. The vehicle went straight into the canal, just north of the Douglas Street foot bridge.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the car completely submerged in the Millrace, and Peterson out safely.
He was found to have a BAC of .21; that is more than two-and-a-half times the legal limit.
Peterson was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor cuts and bruises.
Once he is released, he will be arrested on felony charges of operating while intoxicated, and will be taken to the Elkhart County Jail.
A towing company helped to remove the car from the water. Health Department officials say the crash did not cause any health or environmental concerns.
