NOTRE DAME In honor of Earth Day, Notre Dame is revealing a new state-of-the-art LED lighting system for the Golden Dome.
The project "improves the illumination intensity, quality, and uniformity of the Dome to better display this prominent landmark and icon of the University in the night sky."
The new lights have been attached on surrounding buildings, which will improve the angle at which they strike the dome. This means that less light will reflect off into the sky.
The University says this installation will reduce the energy consumption by over 35,000 kilowatt hours per year and reduce the campus carbon footprint by approximately 12.2 tons per year.
The new lighting system will be switched on at approximately 9:00 p.m. Tuesday evening.
