Girl, 3, drowns during visit to SW Michigan beach

Authorities say a 3-year-old girl drowned at a Lake Michigan beach in southwestern Michigan.

South Haven police say they got a call Wednesday night that a girl was missing in the South Beach area. Maleisa Brown was found by a swimmer in 4 to 4½ feet of water before officers arrived, and CPR was performed at the scene.

In a statement issued Thursday, South Haven police said Maleisa was taken to an area emergency room Wednesday night, where she was pronounced dead.

Police say Maleisa's mother went to the restroom, leaving the child with family members. When the woman returned, she couldn't find her daughter and called 911 about 10 minutes later.
