As a nation we've never paid more at the pump than we did this year.
The national average so far for 2012 is $3.63 per gallon.
The record currently stands at $3.51 per gallon. That was set last year.
In order for gas prices to drop below that level for the 2012 yearly average, the price would have to be $2.35 per gallon or lower, every day for the rest of the year.
