Gary Chavez has been formally charged, after police say he killed his estranged wife and carjacked multiple vehicles in an attempt to evade authorities.

According to Starke County Coroner Kris Rannells, Kimberly Chavez, 50, died from “multiple blunt force trauma injuries.”

On Wednesday, Gary Chavez was formally charged with her murder.

He has also been charged with one count of kidnapping and one count of carjacking.

A warrant for Chavez's arrest has been issued but not served, due to his current medical condition.

After getting his vehicle stuck in gravel while evading police, Gary Chavez shot himself. He remains in critical condition at Christ Advocate Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois

In the affidavit for probable cause, Chavez allegedly told the man he was carjacking: "I killed my wife and I'm on the run."
