The Michiana community will say goodbye to a young St. Joseph boy this weekend after he lost his two-year battle with cancer.

In May of 2011, doctors found a tumor in Alex Mandarino’s stomach and diagnosed him with neuroblastoma at the age of two.

In the years since, Mandarino continued to undergo treatment including several clinical trials in Grand Rapids and New York City.

But his fight against the rare cancer ended tragically on Monday when the five year-old boy passed away.

According to our reporting partners at WSJM, visitation for Alex will be held Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Starks & Menchinger Chapel on Niles Rd. in St. Joseph.

The funeral mass is scheduled for Saturday morning at 11 at St. John Catholic Church in Benton Harbor.
