Funeral held for 7-year-old Elkhart girl Saturday

Around 500 people showed up to say goodbye to a 7-year-old Elkhart girl who died after being shot during a home invasion last week.

Kristyana Jackson was shot in the head and her father john in the arm when some men tried to enter their Elkhart home last Friday night. John was treated and released from an Elkhart hospital shortly after.

Kristyana was rushed to a South Bend hospital where she underwent emergency surgery for brain swelling. She died Sunday. Police are still searching for the people responsible, but have little information.

But Saturday, family and friends focused instead on celebrating Kristyana's life. According to our reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth, folks filled Agape Missionary Baptist Church for Saturday morning's service, sharing their memories of the second grader. They talked about her bright smile, her love of reading and writing and even her fondness for Justin Bieber.

If you'd like to help Kristyana's parents with funeral expenses, a fund has been set up at Elcose Federal Credit Union on South Main Street in Elkhart. Anyone mailing a check should put a note that they want the money to go to the "Jackson Memorial Fund." If people wish to wire the money, they should call the bank at 295-0093.
