About a dozen people gathered to remember a man who was killed in a South Bend shooting last month.

Mack Caldwell, 51, was visiting a friend in the 1000 block of East Bowman St. when he was shot and killed inside a home. Two teens were arrested shortly after.

Those at the vigil say Caldwell was an animal lover and caring friend, who would never harm anyone.

They maintain he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“The 16-year-old, I hope they try him as an adult, because Mack didn't even know him, and that was the most senseless thing. He took a bullet for somebody else,” said longtime friend Tami Voss.

“Just a good person and this was senseless to happen to him,” said another friend Judy Oswald.
Rayterrior Wheeler, 16, is facing felony murder charges in connection with Caldwell's death.

Herbert Brown III, 18, is charged with assisting a criminal.
