Semi carrying Dum Dum suckers blocks Indiana Toll Road for hours Wednesday

BRISTOL, Ind. -- A four-vehicle crash and fiery semi wreck brought traffic to a standstill in the westbound lane of the Indiana Toll Road Wednesday afternoon. The scene was still being cleaned up Thursday morning.

The accident happened at mile marker 99, near Bristol. Police said it involved two separate crashes.

A semi-tractor trailer tried to pull onto the shoulder to fix a tire problem when it was sideswiped by another semi traveling in the right lane, Indiana State Police said.

'It caught on fire, traveled into the north ditch," said State Trooper Jeff Dolson. "The driver was able to get out of the vehicle safely -- no other occupants were in the truck and the truck became fully engulfed."

Traffic slowed as a result of that crash and a second collision happened when a truck pulling a camper rear-ended another semi.

Police said a husband and wife were in the truck and the wife became trapped in the car, her legs crushed by the dash board.

"She was removed safely transported to the RV Hall of Fame and med-evacuated out to South Bend Memorial Hospital," Dolson said.

Meanwhile, the Osolo Township Fire Department was dispatched to control the blaze.

Firefighters said the charred semi was carrying a cargo of Dum Dum suckers.

"It was a mess," said Chief Dean Rentfrow of the Osolo Township Fire Dept. "There were all the plastic bags the card board -- it was packed in the wooden skids it was on."

Rentfrow said it took about 14 thousand gallons of water to extinguish the blaze. He said the driver of the burnt semi was lucky to have made it out because he was very close to rolling over.

"He might not have got out, so yeah, he got out he's lucky," Rentfrow said. "If I were him I'd go out and buy a lottery ticket."

Traffic was restored to the westbound lanes by about 7p.m. Indiana State Police expect some lane closures Thursday as the burnt wreckage is removed from the scene.
