A former Cass County officer will be sentenced Monday for his role in staging fake car accidents.

According to the Niles Daily Star, it was all a scheme to try and collect insurance payouts.

Steven Keene of Dowagiac pleaded guilty last month to charges of conspiracy to commit insurance fraud.

The case was handed over to a Kalamazoo County prosecutor, since Keene was formerly an officer with The Cass County Sheriff's Department.

The crime carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, but Keene is not expected to serve any time because of the details of the plea agreement.
