Despite the rainfall we got Friday afternoon several local communities are still taking precautions to protect residents from potentially dangerous conditions after weeks of dry weather.

Friday morning we learned the burn ban in Elkhart County has been extended through Tuesday, July 10. Fireworks are also banned in the county until then.

Some other upcoming fireworks celebrations in our area also remain canceled.

Friday night's fireworks at Plymouth Speedway are now off after the fire department asked the track to cancel to keep area homes safe from a fire risk.

We also learned the Celebrate America Patriotic Program and Fireworks are canceled for Sunday at Black Squirrel Golf Course in Goshen, because organizers were concerned that folks attending could get sick from the heat.

Finally, Elkhart has cancelled its July 4 fireworks show at Rice Field due to fears that it could put surrounding neighborhoods in danger.

Mayor Moore hopes conditions approve so Elkhart can have a fireworks show later this summer.

In the meantime, the city will still have a patriotic concert in the Bandshell at McNaughton Park at 7 p.m. on July 4.
