An investigation continues after fire engulfed most of a home in Elkhart County. It happened around 6:30 Thursday evening in the 53000 block of Pheasant Ridge Drive, near Bristol.
The homeowner told investigators he was grilling out back and then took part of the charcoal grill into his garage. He then went into his home and returned to find his car and the garage engulfed in flames. Firefighters worked in shifts to battle the near 100 degree heat, and the flames.
"It's just really hot Thursday,” said Bristol Fire Chief Fay Kemp. “Everybody's working really hard, the guys they can only do short shifts in and out. They're coming out to rest, we're rehabbing them and making sure they're okay before they go back in."
Firefighters are still investigating. An upstairs apartment is a total loss. The main house suffered smoke damage.
