The Old Bayer Building on Randolph Street in Elkhart is no more. Friday the charity, Feed the Children announced the completion of the demolition of their former distribution center.
The property is being returned to green space for potential new development.
The charity's Vice-President of Domestic Operations and Program Development tells Newscenter 16 it may be a win-win situation.
“We were in a situation where it was no longer cost efficient to operate out of this facility,” says Gary Sloan of Feed the Children. “It was costing us over a million dollars a year just to maintain and heat and cool the building and what we wanted to do was create a situation for the city and the residents of the city, as well as Feed the Children, that's why we went through the expense of the demolition process for this building and the hope is a new development can come in here and employ a lot of citizens in the Elkhart community, and hopefully some high paying jobs.”
Feed the Children is one of the largest charities based in the U.S. It provides more than 350,000 children around the world with a hot, nourishing meal every day.
