Father and son arrested for shooting near Purdue University North Central

LaPorte County, Ind. A father and his 16-year-old son face several felony charges after shooting a 17-year-old in the hip Thursday.

It happened at a home in the 9500 West block of County Road 125 South in LaPorte County.

Police say 58-year-old David Diederich and his son, 16-year-old Jeremy Diederich, got into an argument with several teens about a drug deal, resulting in several shots being fired at a car. One penetrated the vehicle and struck a 17-year-old, who was sitting in the back seat.

The victim and three other teens fled to the nearby Purdue University North Central campus, where police were called to the scene.

The victim was transported to a Michigan City hospital for treatment.

David and Jeremy were both arrested in connection with the shooting.

David is charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Violent Felon, a Class B felony; Dangerous Control of a Child, a Class C felony; and Aiding, Inducing and Causing Dealing Marijuana, a Class D felony. His bond is set at $25,000.

David’s son, Jeremy, also faces several felony charges. He’s being charged as an adult for Attempted Murder, a Class A felony; Aggravated Battery, a Class B felony; Criminal Recklessness, a Class C felony; and Dealing Marijuana, a Class D felony. Jeremy is being held without bond.

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department is asking the public for help in tracking down a car involved in a crash with the victim near the scene of the shooting. After the shots were fired, police say the victim’s car collided with a dark colored pickup truck as it fled the scene.
