The fate of man accused of fatally shooting two people in South Bend last summer now rests in the hands of a St. Joseph County Superior Court judge.
Brandon Biffle, 29, faces nine felony charges including murder, attempted murder and criminal recklessness in connection to a double homicide on Aug. 12, 2012.
Because Biffle’s defense counsel filed a waiver of jury trial last week, his case will be heard only by Judge Jane Woodward-Miller.
Police say Biffle shot and killed Johnnie Avance, 53, and Donald Paris Sr., 55, in the 1600 block of North Olive St. In addition to the murder charges, Biffle is accused of opening fire on four police officers and shooting at passing cars afterward.
The bench trial is scheduled to begin a week from this Tuesday, on Mar. 12 in St. Joseph County.
