Family safely escapes overnight house fire

Some scary moments for a South Bend family that woke to smoke and flames inside its home.

The blaze happened around 2:19 a.m. Monday in the 800 block of S. Dundee St., that's on the city's west side.

Firefighters pulled-up to find smoke pouring from the attic, near the back of the one-story house.

An overnight low temperature of 27 degrees, mixed with leaking hydrants, created quite an icy mess for fire crews trying to navigate on sidewalks and the street.

Although the home isn't a total loss, Battalion Chief Kevin Kolber says significant repairs need to be made due to fire, smoke and water damage.

Fire investigators have yet to pinpoint an exact cause.
