ELKHART The family of a man who was killed by police is trying to get a hold of transcripts from a grand jury meeting.

Elkhart police officers shot and killed Christopher Ryckeart in November 2013, after a chase that went into Michigan and back. He was reportedly driving a stolen truck. When officers eventually caught up, they say he tried to back over them. That's when they fired their guns.

The details of grand jury proceedings are rarely available to the public, but The Elkhart Truth reports that Ryckeart's mother wants them so she can file a wrongful death estate. That filing would give her the authority to take legal action on behalf of her son.

State police investigators say the officers acted justly when they shot Ryckeart.
