Ex-Bayer plant nearly demolished

The group that owns the massive former Bayer plant in Elkhart says it expects demolition to be finished this fall, clearing the way for them to sell the property, according to reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth.

Crews have already torn down other buildings on the old Bayer campus, and are now demolishing its nearly 1-million-square-foot main building.

Feed the Children's vice president says the 26-acre site should be cleared by November.

The charity organization acquired the plant where Alka-Seltzer was once made back in 2003. They used it as a regional distribution center until closing it because of high operational costs.

Elkhart's director of economic development says the site will be "prime development land."
