The city of South Bend announced a winner for a memorial scholarship they set up.
This afternoon, Mayor Pete Buttigieg announced that Mara Paluszewski, the daughter of a city employee, has won the Evan Sears Memorial Scholarship of $750.
The scholarship was created after south bend intern, evan sears, was killed in a traffic accident while working on a street project back in 1999.
Mara, won after submitting an essay about workplace safety.
She says she's honored to be the recipient of this scholarship.
"It was pretty important to me,” said Puluszewski. “This is actually my second summer interning with the city, so I had already heard Evan's story. But i guess being here two summers, I really get to see the city pursue the safety concerns. How important it was, and it was consistent both years"
Mara will be a junior at Purdue University studying industrial engineering.
