A blaze forced residents out into the cold early Sunday morning, as flames engulfed one side of their house.

Fire crews were called out to the 2,800 block of Elwood around 2:30 a.m.

Fortunately, the residents had escaped the burning home before firefighters arrived.

Investigators are now trying to figure out what sparked the blaze.
“We had pretty good flames showing out of two sides of the residence when we arrived,” said Battalion chief Homeowners were already out, so we made a quick fire attack.”

Firefighters say the home suffered extensive smoke and fire damage, especially in the front room of the building.

Those emergency crews were busy Sunday morning. Just down the street from the fire, they also responded to a car crash.

It happened near the corner of Elwood and Huey Street, before the fire, so crews were already nearby.

The driver crashed his car into a pole, and firefighters say he was trapped inside for some time.

He was freed and taken to the hospital.

No word yet this morning on his condition, or what could have caused the crash.
