Elkhart County kids were getting ready for the 4H fair Monday, checking in projects until 7p.m. But there is a special admission price for them: one item for the food drive.
Elkhart county 4H is collecting food as part of their "Christmas in July Fod Dive.
They will donate the items to food pantries in the county.
The drive gathered more than 1200 donations last year and this year, 4H leaders are hoping to get one item for each of the more than 4000 4H members.
"Traditionally, at Christmas time, people think about giving to food pantries because that's a big push that everyone wants to give back at the end of the year or as part of the holidays as a spirit of giving,” said Pamela Brock, County Educator, 4-H Youth Development. “But historically in July, food pantries are down, so we try to help boost those numbers in our Elkhart County communities."
Brock says the Elkhart County fair is the second largest county fair in the country, just behind Orange County California. It opens Friday, July 20, 2012 at the fairgrounds in Goshen.
And they have a special lunch deal this year. Head out to the fair grounds between 11a.m. and 1 p.m. and put down a $10 deposit. They will give out a ticket to eat any fair foods. As long as the ticket is returned by 2p.m, the $10 will be given back.
