A woman was shot in the foot Monday night during a home invasion in Elkhart. A man, also inside the home, was struck in the head by one of the suspects.
It happened at about 8:40 p.m. when crews from the Elkhart Police Dept. were called to the 500 block of Herrold Ave. for reports of a "possible shooting."
According to a press release issued Tuesday, police arrived at the scene and learned several individuals entered the home.
The one man in the house was injured and the woman was shot in the foot. Both were taken to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment, police expect them to recover.
In addition to those two adults, police said a young girl was also in the home at the time of the invasion. However, police said that the girl was not injured.
For many neighbors the shooting and invasion came at a surprise. The 500-block of Herrold Ave. is located just a stones throw away from an elementary school and full of families with children.
Others living nearby said they've seen a gradual decline in the neighborhood.
Joseph Mulchey has lived just a few blocks away from the shooting for 48 years, he said he is concerned that it's becoming increasingly more dangerous.
"It's going down hill as far as I’m concerned, as far as neighbors—you just don’t know the neighbors like you used to know them," said Mulchey.
But other neighbors are more optimistic, like Lois Crise. She said besides a few break-ins on the street she always feels safe and is relatively quiet.
The "quiet" area isn't enough to stop both Crise and Mulchey from taking extra precautions to lock up their homes, leave lights on and watch out for others on the block.
"It isn't what it used to be. It used to be that you didn’t worry about leaving your doors locked, or whatever might happen. Just things have changed," Mulchey added.
Police have not released names of the victims at this point in time. Neighbors say they've lived there for a little over two years, they keep to themselves and always wave hello.
At this point in time officials are not releasing any more detailed information as to the number of suspects or what they may look like. The incident is under investigation.
