ELKHART, Ind.--- An Elkhart man has been arrested on preliminary charges of driving while intoxicated after police say he wrecked his motorcycle while racing it Tuesday evening.

Lawrence W. Barranca, 50, according to witnesses, was racing another vehicle on his motorcycle at a high rate of speed.

Barranca was then unable to navigate a turn on Spring River Dr. and drove through a yard before the motorcycle went airborne over a driveway.

His motorcycle then struck a landscaping light and tree before coming to a complete stop.

Barranca failed a field sobriety test given by police and was then transported to Elkhart General Hospital with minor injuries.

The second driver, who has not been identified, was later located.

Both drivers are being investigated for reckless driving and for holding a speed contest.
