The Knights of Columbus Council 1043 of Elkhart will deliver food baskets to 650 families in need in Elkhart, Goshen and other Elkhart County areas.
Over 100 volunteers will help pack the boxes of food Friday night at their warehouse location, Northland Center, off County Road 6. And Saturday morning, volunteers will also begin food delivery to local families. Organizers say Friday night is all about the kids, encouraging families to attend the "organized chaos."
The group has been preparing and collecting food since the end of September. They say the community has stepped forward with support including food donations and discounts from area retailers. Each family will receive two food boxes to include at least three cans of vegetables, one can of fruit, a ham, a loaf of bread, peanut butter, cereal and rice among many other items.
The warehouse space, the boxes and the vast majority of food and monetary donations were from community support.
The Knights of Columbus Council 1043 has continued to increase the amount of families they help over the years. This year's 650 families is up from last year when they helped 600. Organizers say they will continue to grow with the need. They say they know they're making a difference because of the smiles on the children's faces.
