An Elkhart food pantry has held an emotional memorial for two volunteers who died in a car crash while on their way to help out at the church-run pantry.

ELKHART, Ind. An Elkhart food pantry has held an emotional memorial for two volunteers who died in a car crash while on their way to help out at the church-run pantry.

Friday's ceremony honored 47-year-old Dawn Leatherman and 69-year-old Alice Barnes. Police they died Oct. 25 when their car slide on ice into another vehicle's path as they were traveling to the Elizabeth Abel Food Pantry in Elkhart.

The Elkhart Truth reports Leatherman and Barnes lived near one another and would drive every Friday morning to the food pantry.

Pantry director Carl Pontius says the women would drive to Middlebury, Goshen and other places to pick up items for the food pantry. They were organized the pantry's clothing closet, which has been named after the two women.
