Elkhart Police respond to shooting

Elkhart, Ind. Elkhart Police responded to a shooting Friday night in the 300 block of Wagner Ave near Benham Ave.

It happened around 10:30 p.m.

Witnesses on the scene say police pulled over a car in what appeared to be a traffic violation.

Almost immediately after the car was pulled over, upwards of 6 shots rang out down the street.

"I was walking with my friend and we were walking toward my other friend's house and we just heard them it was like boom boom boom," said Demia Johnston who lives nearby. "And we took off running and we ran into the house and all I could do was start crying."

Neighbors at the Washington Gardens Apartment complex say the police response was immediate because police were already on the scene.

"We saw one police officer here because he pulled the car over and I guess that's where all the cops came from," Johnston said.

No word yet as to whether police were able to determine the source of those shots.

Few details have yet to be released about the shooting, but dispatchers tell NewsCenter16 one person was taken to the hospital. It is unclear if that person was shot.

The scene was cleaned up in less than an hour.
