ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. Northern Indiana communities are diversifying their industries and working to improve workers' skills as they recover from the Great Recession.

Elkhart County's unemployment rate jumped to nearly 19 percent in 2009 as the RV industry began to plummet.

Though things are beginning to look up, places like Syracuse have lost half of their manufacturing jobs.

But now, companies are realizing that there's a need for a diverse industrial base and an educated workforce.

Companies are training employees to improve their skills, and community leaders are working to boost tourism to expand revenue sources.
