With all of this week's snowfall, Elkhart City Officials are taking the time to remind residents to keep city sidewalks safe.
A city ordinance requires all homeowners to take the proper actions to clear sidewalks of snow. Homeowners have 24 hours to get the sidewalks near their property cleaned.
Failure to do so could result in a $25 fine each time the sidewalks go uncleared. City officials say this rule is not to punish homeowners, but to promote public safety.
If anyone is unable to comply with the ordinance, they are asked to contact the Building and Code Enforcement Department for a hardship exception.
