Brian Kelly interviews for Eagles head coaching position

The Philadelphia Eagles interviewed Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly for the team's coaching vacancy on Tuesday, a NFL league source confirms to WNDU.

Kelly was the third college coach Philadelphia interviewed since firing Andy Reid on Dec. 31.

According to an ESPN article written by NFL reporter Chris Mortensen, there was mutual interest after the interview. Kelly has since been unavailable for comment, as he vacations outside the country.

Penn State's Bill O'Brien and Oregon's Chip Kelly interviewed with the Eagles last week, but chose to stay at their schools.

The Eagles have interviewed six candidates and plan to meet with four others.

Rumors of NFL opportunities first began to float in the days leading-up to the BCS National Championship Game. In response, Kelly said the "NFL wasn't an option."

Perhaps now it is.

In three seasons at Notre Dame, Kelly has re-built the program--leading the Irish to an undefeated regular season and a trip to the BCS National Championship game, which Notre Dame lost 42-14 to Alabama on Monday.

"I think Brian has the same feeling in his stomach that I have in mine--we want to finish this," Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick said moments after Monday night's loss and just a night before Kelly interviewed with the Eagles. "That's the biggest motivation--to not just get this program back to elite status--but to get another national championship."

I asked Swarbrick if Kelly has said he wants to come back or if those conversations have even occurred.

"We haven't had that conversation--not when we're preparing for a national championship," Swarbrick responded at the time.

So when will that conversation occur?

"We always sit down at the end of the season--when it ends--and discuss every aspect of the program," Swarbrick said. "There's no rush on that. He's gotta do some recruiting. I have some BCS things. Next time we're both on campus--we'll have that conversation."

There may be more of a rush now.
