A drunk driving accident turned fatal late Thursday night for a driver near North Liberty.

It happened around 10:30 at the intersection of Lath Trail and State Road 23. Police say Randolph Brown, 54, of Rolling Prairie crashed his pickup truck into the car of Britanny Ruggles, 24, fom North Liberty.

Ruggles had to be cut from her car, but her injuries are not thought to be serious. The male driver died on the scene before medical helicopter crews could get to him.

Police say he had obviously been drinking, which could complicate the investigation.

"Due to alcohol being involved, the St. Joseph County FACT team has been called in to do a further investigation,” St. Joseph County Sgt. William Redman says. “Since the driver is deceased, it's going to hamper the situation a little bit as far as that goes. But they are here to investigate further.”

State Road 23 was closed after the crash. Ruggles is a St. Joseph County corrections officer and was on her way home from work.
