Douglas road construction, reroute update

Major construction for the rerouting of Douglas Road in South Bend is underway. Winter weather allowed for preliminary work to be done early, but major work only started two weeks ago.

The new route between 933 and Juniper Road is expected to be complete by mid-August, and university spokesperson, Dennis Brown, says things are on-schedule.

"It is quick. Notre dame has a way of doing things pretty quickly," said Brown. "We have some experience with this with some of the local contractors involved, who helped reroute Twychenham Road when we shut down Juniper through the middle of campus a few years ago. There's some experience here, both from the university standpoint but as well as with the local contractors," said Brown.

Nearby residents say noise is a slight concern, but the bigger issue is safety. Quite a few young children live in the University Village Apartments, and parents fear the new road could allow for too easy access to the major highway.

"It hasn't been too much of a nuisance really, some of that noise is frustrating, that constant beeping, beep beep beep. Or trucks backing up, I think that's going to get old pretty quickly," said Kristi McDonald, a Village Resident and parent. "We all have children, obviously, so we're concerned about the access they will have to the roads and how we'll be protected from that."

All concerns aside, residents say they are surprised how quickly the project is moving.

"I think it's been incredibly quick. I think Notre Dame makes really quick progress on all of their projects. I'm really amazed, absolutely amazed," said Kathryn Long, another Village Apartment resident and parent.
