St. Joe County's Reducing Obesity Coalition spent the Sunday collecting gently used or outgrown bikes for needy children in the community.
The idea, sparked by the health department, will pair select kids with South Bend firefighters. Together, each mentor and mentee will take part in hands-on workshops where they'll learn about bike safety and maintenance.
"We really see that there's a need for increased activity outside of school, so we're hoping as more kids realize how fun it is to bike, not only will they burn those extra calories, but they'll be more active, grow up to be stronger and healthier teens" said Robin Meleski, Education Director of the St. Joseph County health Department.
