A family pet is getting credit for helping a father and daughter escape a fire Thursday morning unharmed.

It happened in the 900-block of Sprucewood Lane in South Bend around 9 am.

The dog started barking and woke the man and his daughter up.

The family says they believe the fire started in the basement and it’s not the first time.

The mom says a faulty fan was to blame in the first fire and her landlord never came to fix it.

"I am renting, this is the second time this has happened. I am pretty much done with this house, I am scared. I don't want to live here anymore. It is by the grace of God we have been saved twice," says tenant Felicia Williams.

The cause of this fire remains under investigation.
