SOUTH BEND, Ind. The housing construction boom is poised to reach new heights in downtown South Bend.
The developer of a proposed five story apartment building now wants to raise the roof to seven stories.
As a result, the height of the East Bank Flats at Colfax and Sycamore would increase from 50 feet to 93 feet.
Developer Dave Matthews says the change is needed for the project to remain competitive in light of a December decision that an eight story condo project -- called The Cascades-- could be built nearby.
The zoning code requires special permission to build higher than five stories.
East Bank Flats will be seeking such permission at a meeting of the board of zoning appeals scheduled for February 5.
