Firefighters battled a pair of suspicious fires near downtown Niles, involving two houses next to each other.

Crews were called to the 400-block of fourth street this morning for one house on fire.

When they arrived, they discovered smoke and flames coming from the house next to it as well, and called in extra help.

Both homes were vacant, and there were no injuries.

The first home sustained extensive damage, but flames at the second house were put out quickly and there was only minor damage.

“The biggest challenge on any fire is communication, and so when I say take an interior line to the second floor, does that mean to this building or the other building,” said Niles fire chief Larry Lamb. “So, we actually midway through the fire changed and separated onto two separate channels, so there is not confusion on what building we are talking about.”

Investigators say they don't believe the fire spread from one house to the other.. Since the burning sections were not next to each other.

Bystanders told NewsCenter 16 they saw someone walking away from home before they saw the smoke start.

Police are working to obtain a search warrant to further investigate.
