If you didn't check a calendar Wednesday, it was probably worth doing so. After all, the day marked Dec. 12, 2012, better known as 12-12-12. The numerical alliteration is the last triple-digit-string of the century, making for some special memories.

That list included the unforgettable wedding of Elkhart Fire Department Lt. David Richter and his new bride Heather Richter.

The makeshift wedding aisle, lined by white fire hoses, was setup outside Elkhart’s Central Station along Waterfall Dr. About 75 guests attended the ceremony, which fittingly began at 12 p.m., as firefighters-turned-ushers walked down the aisle carrying axes.

If the day wasn't unorthodox enough, the Richter’s said their "I Do's" 100 feet above downtown Elkhart, in the cramped rescue basket of Ladder Truck 18.

"It’s all his fault. He brought-up the 12-12-12 idea,” Heather Richter said with a laugh. “Originally we weren't going to do something so extravagant, however it happened to work out and everybody at the station wanted to pull this together so it happened.”

Following the ceremony, a reception was held inside the station’s apparatus garage, with a firefighter-themed wedding cake.

"I thought it was unusual doing a wedding at Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, Tenn., but this is definitely at the top of my list and I’ve been doing weddings since 2001. This has to be the most unique one that I have ever done,” Rev. Dr. Mike Dearing said.

David’s Bridal estimated 5,700 couples tied the knot on Dec. 12, 2012.

A select group of youngsters celebrated true golden birthdays Wednesday. Aubrei Donica, a sixth-grade student at Corpus Christi School, turned 12 on 12-12-12. Taylor Baughn of LaGrange County turned 12 on Nov. 30, 2012, meaning she’d been 12-years-old for 12-days on 12-12-12.
