A semi-truck loaded with corn rolled over late Monday morning in St. Joseph County.
Jerry Zahner, 64, was driving along Dogwood Rd. in Madison Twp. when his truck veered onto the soft shoulder alongside the roadway and turned over.
The accident left Zahner trapped inside the truck, and sent $10,000 worth of grain spilling across the pavement. He was able to escape without any injury after a neighbor came to his aid and helped pull him out through a door.
Zahner’s son and fellow farmer Chad Zahner said the accident was a close call, but one that comes with the territory.
“He's been doing this his whole life, so it's nothing new. Farming is dangerous, there's no doubt about it. He just happened to get off the side of the road here, and he caught the side of the bank he said and he said I just couldn't get back on. He said it was soft and just sucked him right down,” said Chad.
Despite the totaled truck and the mess made by the accident, Chad says he is just thankful his father made it out alive. This morning they had a vacuum sent to clean up the spilled grain to make it quote, “nice and tidy.”
Zahner said that even though it is a highway it was his fault the road was wrecked, and explained that he and his fellow farmers would be the ones to help with the cleanup.
