Concerned citizens petition for more gun control

It is a major issue across the country, and South Bend community members are doing their part to take a stand against gun violence.

On Friday, over a dozen concerned citizens gathered in front of Senator Donnelly's office to hand over a petition containing around 300 signatures. The petition was accompanied by a letter, asking the senator to consider President Obama's plan for guns.

"Namely were looking for universal background checks, limit on high capacity magazines, ban on assault and military weapons and action as far as gun trafficking goes," said Dale Gibson, one of the demonstrators.

Organizers said they recognized Donnelly's recent statement indicating his support for increased background checks on gun-buyers, claiming it's a positive step forward. But confirmed, they'd still like to see more.

"If all of them [Indiana congressional members] or any of them could be in the first grade classroom in Sandy Hook, the morning of the shooting just seconds before Adam Lanza came in, could they look those children in the eye and say, 'I"m sorry, there's nothing I can do,'" said Marybeth Dickey.

Senator Donnelly could not be reached by phone Friday, but his press office released this statement. "Senator Donnelly is open to a bipartisan compromise on background checks, one that helps keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill while protecting our Second Amendment rights."

A representative from the South Bend office addressed the petioners outside assuring Senator Donnelly will recieve the petitions.

Organizers say they plan on sending copies of the petitions and letters to Congresswoman Walorski and Senator Coats in the near future.

"It's something that needs to start at the community level. People need to be in contact with both people in the congress and in the senate, that's why we're here at senator Donnelly's office today," said Kathy Liggett, the citizen organizer.
