Parents work to preserve long-time Granger soccer field

Some parents are stepping up to preserve a soccer field with decades of history in Granger, Ind. The field was put up for sale and that meant that a place filled with memories could be wiped away.

But, the Michiana Soccer Association (MSA) now has until December 21 to come up with the funds to buy the property, which is listed at $185,000. The original deadline to close the deal was this Friday.

MSA has leased the property since the 1970's as a practice field for young players. The owner of the property passed away and relatives managing her estate decided to sell the field.

When Clare Roach saw the "For Sale" sign at the field, she felt the need to do something.

"The thought of these fields becoming just a memory was more than I could bear," Roach said.

So, she and some other parents took to the streets and raised awareness about the situation.

"It was completely grassroots," she said.

A Facebook page titled "save Knollwood Soccer Fields" follows the efforts. Many have posted photos and memories from the field as motivation to keep trying to keep it as is.

"It's been this way for as long as I can remember," said David Eckrich, who has coached at the field. "My main concern is, how do we keep it that way?'"

A fundraiser thermometer is prominently displayed on the field to illustrate the progress being made.

"We've had donations of $50, we have had donations of $15,000," Roach said.

And, the hope is that each dollar added to the cause will allow more children to take part in the sport and create more memories at Knollwood.

"Most people at a gut level understand that these fields are very valuable to the kids," Roach said. "A lot of people wanted to advocate for them."
