Comcast Cares: Local volunteers "cut for a cause"

MISHAWAKA Cutting for a cause, that was the motto at Jo Ann Fabric on Monday, as Jo Ann employees helped area Comcast employee-volunteers match and cut fleece for a special April project.

On April 26, 85,000 Comcast employees nationwide will team up with community organizations, to volunteer for service projects, hand-selected by the employees. Since it was started in 2001, Comcast has clocked in 3 million volunteer hours, improved more than 5,000 project sites and contributed more than $14 million to local non-profit organizations.

Comcast and NBC Universal will fund every project across the country, including t-shirts and lunch on the day of the event. The amount each project receives, depends on participation.

"The funding for Comcast Cares Day really begins with the signup of volunteers," said Greg Gomolka, the Government and Community Affairs Manager at Comcast. "Today, you see us buying fabric for the blanket project, but we also buy paint, and paint brushes, rakes, whatever it takes to get a project done."

In Michiana, volunteers got a jump-start on one of their projects. Employees will donate hundreds of fleece tie-blankets to patients at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. Many employees have to work the day of the Comcast Cares event, so the blanket project is a way to give back without giving up a work day.

"It is so much fun just every year," said Rhonda Walker, a Comcast employee and project volunteer. "I don't sew or do anything like that, so these are the easiest blankets I have ever done, they are so easy."

Volunteers began purchasing fabric Monday, and will put together blankets now until the event on April 26.

Comcast employees can also participate in two other Comcast Cares localized events. They will paint and fix up Berrien Career Tech at Niles High School and volunteer time and cleanup efforts at Reins of Life in South Bend.
