Elkhart City votes on trash pickup fee Monday

Elkhart city leaders will consider a controversial proposal Monday that would require residents to pay for garbage service.

An ordinance was introduced to the city council earlier in August that would install a monthly fee of $11.35 for trash pick-up.

A similar proposal was voted down in 2008.

Mayor Dick Moore says the ordinance would help the city makeup some of the $10.5 million it has lost in property tax revenue since then.

Many other cities in the state are already doing it, including South Bend, Plymouth and Mishawaka.

If the proposal passes in Elkhart, the fee would be added to residents' monthly utility bill.

The council is expected to vote on the measure at their next regular meeting Monday at 7 p.m.

Meantime, while Elkhart decides on a proposed trash collection fee in the city, Goshen has also been mulling it over, according to reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth.
