City By City Report for Dec. 6, 2013

Here's a recap of our City By City report from Friday, Dec. 6, 2013:

Goshen has named its small business of the year. According to our reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth, Woldruff's Footwear and Apparel won this year's honor for their great customer service, their involvement with Kiwanis Club, and their downtown promotional efforts. The company has been in business for 21 years.

A fundraiser happening Friday will give a family a memorial for their teen daughter, who went missing more than a year ago. Aurora Shoemaker's remains were found this fall. A silent auction and bake sale in her honor runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds.

There's a free holiday light display going on at Central Park in Warsaw. You can check out more than 200,000 lights from 4 p.m. to midnight starting Friday through December 31st. There will also be holiday music to get your family in the spirit.

Children are invited to “Bounce for Boo” Friday. According to 1050 The Chief, it's a benefit for 5-year-old Marcelino "Boo" Linder, who is living with a rare childhood cancer. For $2, children can bounce in the bounce house. The benefit runs from 9 a.m. to noon at Menominee Elementary School.

St. Joseph County

The Salvation Army is getting worried about meeting their fundraising goal. They say the shorter time between Thanksgiving and Christmas has left them less time to raise money. This year, they plan to help 1,000 families in the county. Their goal is to raise $360,000. To help, they ask that when you see a red kettle, you give generously if you are able.

A Mishawaka police officer has received the mayor's lifesaving award for saving a child. Back in August, a four-year-old wouldn't wake up from a nap at a daycare. Corporal Jennifer Wilson immediately performed CPR before paramedics arrived. The child eventually made a full recovery.

Notre Dame

Former Irish basketball star Skylar Diggins received a special honor this week. She was named the Sportswoman of the Year by the March of Dimes New York division at its 30th anniversary sports luncheon on Wednesday. Longtime New York Yankees great Mariano Rivera was named Sportsman of the Year.

The city is celebrating a day of giving from noon to 7 p.m. Friday. You can donate a toy for Toys for Tots as well as adult clothing items, non-perishable food items, toiletries, pajamas for kids, and items for babies like diapers and wipes. They also need items for veterans. We have more details on the Big Red Bar. The donations will help people in need in Berrien and Cass counties.
