Christmas tree recycling

While Christmas trees may no longer serve a purpose in home now that Christmas is over, they can still serve a purpose by being recycled.

Recycled Christmas trees are ground up in into high quality mulch and then provided to South Bend residents free of charge.

Officials ask that South Bend residents place their trees at the curb no later than 6 a.m. on the day of their scheduled tree pickup.
They also ask that no lights, ornaments, garlands, tree stands or hooks remain on the trees when crews come to pick up the tree.

Christmas trees can also be dropped off starting Thursday, December 27, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Run Village, Pinhook or Veterans Memorial parks. Signs will be posted inside the parks to direct residents to the drop-off zones.

Automatic tree pickups will begin on January 3, on the northeast side of South Bend and moving clockwise around the city until Friday, January 13:

Northeast side: January 3 & 4
Southeast side: January 5 & 6
Southwest side: January 9 & 10
Northwest side: January 11 & 12

Further information on Christmas tree pick up can be requested from the Street Department at 235-9244.

The city of Elkhart will start its Christmas tree pickup as well, residents of the city can place their trees curbside on trash days after New Year's Eve.

Also beginning December 31, Elkhart will open its drop-off locations at West Wide Middle School, Riverview Softball Field's parking lot and Pierre Moran School. Tree pick-ups and drop-offs will run until January 11.
