A Chicago man who admitted to fatally punching a teenager on an Indiana beach nearly two years ago, has learned his punishment.
James Malecek, 20, was sentenced to 145 days, or about four-and-a-half months, in jail, after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of 17-year-old Kevin Kennelly Jr. of Chicago.
The deadly brawl happened during a Fourth of July Beach Party back in 2011, at Long Beach along Lake Michigan, just north of Michigan City.
Investigators say Malecek was in a fight with another group of teens when Kennelly tried to break it up. That's when Malecek punched Kennelly in the head. He lost consciousness, and died the next morning.
Malecek apologized Friday in court, calling it a, quote, "terrible accident." In addition to the jail time, Malecek will also face four years of electronic monitoring.
