October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and you can show your support by joining the "Pink your Porch" campaign.
Susan G. Komen of Northern Indiana has joined forces with the Century Center and Martin's Supermarkets this year in the Race for the Cure.
Monday South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg was at the kickoff ceremony at the Century Center. He's the newest inductee into the 2012 class of Pink Tie Guys.
“I am honored to join the ranks of the Pink Tie Guys,” says Mayor Pete Buttigieg. “Basically it's leaders in our community showing solidarity to women survivors and basically anyone who everyone who works to raise awareness and prevent breast cancer.”
Even though Breast Cancer Awareness Month runs through the entire month of October, Monday, October 8, was chosen to kick off the event because one in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
As for "Pinking your Porch," Martin's is selling pink light bulbs for $5 each and $0.75 stays right here in Northern Indiana to help with services and screening. Another $0.25 goes directly to research.
