Sharing stories at the Center for the Homeless luncheon

A community organization in South Bend hosted its annual holiday luncheon this afternoon at Century Center.

Donors, community members, employees and guests of the Center for the Homeless were all in attendance at the holiday luncheon Thursday. And organizers for the event say it was certainly a way to bring the community together.

It's the second largest annual fundraiser the Center for the Homeless puts on.

And around 700 people attended and listened as speakers shared stories about life's hardships.

They were proud to host keynote speaker, Liz Murray, well known for the Lifetime movie and her memoir Homeless to Harvard.

There were also members from the community who shared their stories, including one man who said he wouldn't be where he is today without help from the center.

John Gross said he appreciated the format of luncheon, sharing a meal and also a story between unlikely guests.

"It's just a sharing of stories,” he said. “I'm sure everybody who, you could be a big donor here and still doesn't mean you were necessarily born a big donor. I'm sure there are people here who had their own trials and tribulations they had to come through to get to where they know they can be on the helping end of things"

“It's too bad there isn't something like this in every community,” he added. “There's lots of places around the world where people would pray to god for something like this in their neighborhood."

Other organizers at Friday's luncheon said the holidays can be rough on many of the guests at the Center For The Homeless, so the luncheon offered a way for community members to give back to those in need, and really embrace the holiday season.
