Car crash knocks out power to 5,000 Berrien County customers

The power is back on for homes and businesses near Benton Harbor and Benton Charter Township.

Around 2 a.m. Sunday, an accident at the corner of Union St. and Nickerson Ave. caused a large outage, impacting more than 5,000 homes. As of 7 a.m., only 300 I&M customers were still in the dark. By 9 a.m. everyone had their power restored.

A NewsCenter 16 viewer said she woke to the "pop and flash" of a transformer blowing around the time of the crash.

No word on what caused the wreck, or if anyone in the vehicle was injured.
