Winter fun: Buchanan kicks off "Thrill on the Hill"

It's the second year Buchanan is offering residents unique, winter fun, at a reasonable cost.

Thrill on the Hill, put on by the city, started Friday at 5 p.m. and runs through Saturday at 9 p.m. Kids and adults of all ages took to a manmade hill, on what's usually a busy street downtown Buchanan. And this year, officials added to the fun by including a brand new 9-foot ramp, at a 45 degree angle.

Last year, organizers say the lack of snow caused anxiety this time around. So, they rented a snow machine to prevent last-minute crisis. But Mother Nature was good to Michiana.

"Two weeks ago we had 50 degree weather and now we're in the teens, so we've been slugging it out with Mother Nature for some time," said Bill Marx, Buchanan's City Manager.

It was cold, but that didn't stop attendees from hitting the hill.

"This is actually really lucky because last time it was like 60 degrees and no snow, it was all melted," said Buchanan resident, 11-year-old Aaron Kidd.

Fun for all ages was the city's goal, and organizers say the event, with the help of multiple volunteers and sponsors, will create memories to last a lifetime.

"This gets people out. And it ought to be a lot of fun. Hey, it doesn't matter if you're 50 or 60 or 30 or 20, it's a great sledding hill, and it brings you back to the old days," said Fred Upton, (R) Michigan's 6th District.

"We're creating some memories. In 50 years, these kids are going to say, 'I remember when we shut down the street and they let us go down in inner tubes,' that's what we're doing just having fun," said Marx.
